These are long chain polymers with a backbone of alternating silicon and oxygen molecules. The chemical bonds within these polymers are much stronger than those of the hydrocarbon polymers and give silicones very different and useful characteristics. They are highly water-repellent and are used in some of the Nikwax products, though not as a single active ingredient (i.e. none of the products relies purely on silicones for their effect).
