An internet is a network of other networks, so the function of an internet is to move information from one LAN, for example, to another LAN that may be geographically distant. "The Internet" usually refers to a global network of networks that uses the TCP/IP protocol suite to support a number of applications for information sharing and retrieval including the World Wide Web and Gopher.
